How Do I Use Metronidazole Topical Gel for Rosacea?

Metronidazole topical gel is an over the counter comprehensive gel that is used to treat acne rosacea, a persistent condition where the facial skin becomes inflamed and develops sores. The product's key ingredient is 75 percent of Metronidazole, with inactive ingredients of methylparaben, propylparaben, Edentate Disodium, Propylene Glycol, and Sodium Hydroxide. Although the topical gel reduces the number of sores and the redness, it is not necessarily a cure.

Metronidazole topical gel should be applied to the skin once or twice a day. It should be used exactly as directed, with no more or no less of the gel applied per session. After using the topical gel, the acne should improve within the first three weeks, with additional improvements in the following six weeks. Before applying the gel, the user should clean the affected skin area with a mild soap for approximately 15 minutes. As an alternative, the gel can be applied immediately after cleaning and/or showering in the morning or evening. At that point, a thin layer of gel should be applied and rubbed softly into the affected area. Metronidazole is only for external use so users should exercise caution during the application so that it does not get into the eyes, mouth, or nose.

Metronidazole may make skin sensitive to sunlight, so those who are actively using the gel should avoid extended exposure to sunlight and wear protection against the sun such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and protective clothing. Metronidazole might cause some side effects in some individuals, such as irritation, dryness, burning, stinging, and increased skin redness. If any of these side effects are experienced, a doctor should be contacted immediately. The metronidazole gel should be stored properly in its original container at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Therefore, it is recommended that the topical gel is not kept in the bathroom.
